Reference beers

210 widely-known beers, carried because they anchor a style, mark a moment in brewing history or are where a great many people start.

What this is, and what it is not

This is not a catalogue and not a ratings list. There is no score on any of these pages and there will not be one — BeerHQ has no basis for telling you whether a beer is good, and the sites that do have millions of user reviews behind them.

What these records are for is anchoring. Somebody who says “I like Guinness” has named a product rather than a style, and the recommendation engine cannot reason until it can get from one to the other. Every beer here earns its place by being useful in that way, and each page records which kind of usefulness it is.

Strengths are stored as dated ranges because they differ by market and change without announcement. No recipe, hop bill, yeast strain or IBU figure appears for any commercial beer unless it is sourced — which is why you will find fewer numbers here than on a typical beer page, and why the ones you do find can be relied on.
