Adnams

Adnams Ghost Ship

A pale, citrus-led British golden ale that became one of the most widely stocked cask beers in the country, and one of the few with a credible alcohol-free version.

Also called Ghost Ship.

Ghost Ship is a good illustration of where British golden ale ended up: a pale, low-gravity base built for drinkability, hopped for citrus and lemon rather than for the earthy Fuggle-and-Goldings profile of a traditional bitter. It is recognisably a British ale rather than an American pale ale, because the malt stays soft and the bitterness finishes rather than dominates.

The 0.5% version is worth knowing about separately. Alcohol-free beer built on a hop-forward pale base tends to work better than one built on a malt-led style, because there is less residual sweetness for the missing alcohol to expose.

What is distinctive about it

  • One of the small number of British cask ales with a widely distributed alcohol-free counterpart
  • Hopped for citrus and lemon character rather than the earthier profile of a traditional bitter

There is an alcohol-free counterpart

Adnams Ghost Ship 0.5% is sold as the alcohol-free counterpart of this beer, at 0.5% ABV. It is worth knowing about as a different beer rather than as a substitute for this one.

If you like Adnams Ghost Ship

Worked out from what this beer actually tastes like rather than from what its style typically does. Three kinds of move, because “what should I try next” is three different questions.

Likely fits rather than promises. Taste varies, and a recommendation engine that claims certainty is claiming something it cannot know.

What to eat with it

Inherited from British golden ale. BeerHQ does not duplicate pairings onto individual products unless the product genuinely differs from its style.

Keeping it

British golden ale shows best within 3–21 days of packaging. After that it declines in quality rather than becoming unsafe.

Drink fresh. Buy it as young as you can and drink it soon. What makes this beer worth drinking is the first thing to leave it.

Derived from British golden ale. See storage and freshness for the full model.
