Emerging. Widely brewed and broadly agreed, but recent enough that its boundaries are still moving.

A session IPA is an attempt to keep IPA aroma at a strength that permits a second and third glass, and it is genuinely difficult to do. Below about 5% there is very little malt body to carry the hop load, so the same dry-hopping rate that reads as generous at 6.5% can read as thin, grassy or harshly bitter at 4.2%.

The successful examples solve it with grist rather than hops: a little wheat or oats for body, restrained bittering, and most of the hop charge late or in the dry hop. If a session IPA tastes watery, the fault is almost always a malt bill that was simply scaled down rather than rebuilt.

The diagnostic is the finish. A good session IPA is lean rather than thin — there is a real difference, and it comes from the small amount of wheat or oats that gives the beer something to end on. If the aroma is bright but the beer disappears immediately after swallowing, the grist was too simple, and no amount of dry hop will fix it.

Freshness and storage

Session IPA shows best within 1–2 months of packaging. After that it declines in quality rather than becoming unsafe.

Drink fresh. Buy it as young as you can and drink it soon. What makes this beer worth drinking is the first thing to leave it.

  • Built on hop aroma, which is the least durable thing in beer. What you are paying for is the first thing to leave.

What changes with time

  • Flavour decline. The beer is still perfectly sound, but the most volatile parts of its character have faded. Weeks to a few months, fastest in heavily dry-hopped beer.
  • Staling. The general, gradual loss of freshness that affects all beer, accelerated sharply by warmth. Months, and roughly twice as fast for every 10 °C warmer.

Old beer tastes worse; it does not become dangerous. Ethanol, low pH, hop compounds and the absence of oxygen make packaged beer hostile to the organisms that cause foodborne illness. The exception is a compromised package — visible mould at the closure, a pierced or rusted can, a lifted cap — which is a reason to discard the beer regardless of its age.

Characteristics that may be expected here

Each of these is treated as a fault in most beer, and in this style it can be part of the character. Intensity and context decide which: a trace that suits the style and an obvious, dominating version of the same thing are not the same finding. Grassy

A light grassy edge is common and accepted in very heavily dry-hopped beers, where it comes with the territory of large hop loads. Pronounced lawn-clipping character is a fault in any style.

Faults to watch for

  • Faded hop characterThe specific staling of hop character: the aroma fades first, and badly stored hops can turn cheesy.
  • OxidationThe universal ageing fault: oxygen degrades beer into papery, cardboard-like staleness, and dulls everything that made it good.

How it got here

The name dates to the early 2010s and describes a strength rather than a tradition: IPA hopping at around 4% ABV, sold into a market that wanted the flavour without the strength. "Session" is borrowed from British usage, where it long predates any connection to IPA.

How it is made

The steps that shape this style in particular, rather than the ones every beer goes through.

  • Whirlpool hoppingSteep hops in wort held below boiling — typically 75–85 °C — to extract aroma compounds with far less isomerisation than a boil addition.
