These are BeerHQ’s own groupings, not official categories. They exist because knowing you want “something not too bitter” should be enough to get an answer.
- Crisp & refreshing
Pale, clean-fermented beers with a dry finish and brisk carbonation, built to refresh rather than to be contemplated.
- Light & easy-drinking
Lower-strength beers with soft flavour and little bitterness, designed to be drinkable over a long session.
- Hoppy & bitter
Beers where hop bitterness leads, with resinous, citrus or earthy hop character and a dry, cutting finish.
- Juicy & aromatic
Heavily hopped beers that emphasise fruit aroma and a soft, full mouthfeel while keeping bitterness deliberately low.
- Malty & amber
Amber to copper beers built on kilned and caramel malt, with toffee and toast flavour and hops kept in support.
- Dark & roasted
Dark beers led by roasted grain, from dry and coffee-like to sweet and chocolatey, at everyday strengths.
- Rich & strong
High-strength beers with concentrated malt, noticeable alcohol warmth and the stability to develop with age.
- Wheat & fruity
Wheat-based beers with soft body and pronounced fruit character, from banana-and-clove Bavarian to spiced Belgian white.
- Spicy & Belgian
Yeast-driven Belgian beers with peppery phenolics, high carbonation and a dry finish that hides substantial strength.
