Also known as golden ale, summer ale.

British golden ale was a direct commercial response to lager taking the summer trade in the 1980s. It answers with a beer paler than a bitter, cleaner in yeast character and hopped for citrus and floral aroma rather than the earthy Fuggle-and-Goldings profile — served cooler, and aimed squarely at a drinker who might otherwise order a lager.

The category has since absorbed a great deal of New World hop influence, so a modern example may lean closer to a pale ale than to its bitter origins. What holds it together is the British ale base underneath: modest gravity, a soft malt body and enough bitterness to finish dry.

The style was created to give cask ale something to offer drinkers who had gone to lager, and a good one succeeds on those terms: pale, dry, citrusy and cold enough to refresh without losing the soft carbonation that makes cask cask. It fades faster than a darker bitter because the hop aroma is the point, so a golden ale in poor condition has less to fall back on than almost any other cask beer.

Freshness and storage

British golden ale shows best within 3–21 days of packaging. After that it declines in quality rather than becoming unsafe.

Drink fresh. Buy it as young as you can and drink it soon. What makes this beer worth drinking is the first thing to leave it.

  • Changes quickly enough that freshness is the dominant quality variable.

What changes with time

  • Flavour decline. The beer is still perfectly sound, but the most volatile parts of its character have faded. Weeks to a few months, fastest in heavily dry-hopped beer.
  • Staling. The general, gradual loss of freshness that affects all beer, accelerated sharply by warmth. Months, and roughly twice as fast for every 10 °C warmer.

Old beer tastes worse; it does not become dangerous. Ethanol, low pH, hop compounds and the absence of oxygen make packaged beer hostile to the organisms that cause foodborne illness. The exception is a compromised package — visible mould at the closure, a pierced or rusted can, a lifted cap — which is a reason to discard the beer regardless of its age.

How it got here

British golden ale was a considered answer to lager rather than an evolution of bitter. From the 1980s, cask brewers built pale, clean, citrus-hopped beers aimed squarely at drinkers who had moved to lager for its appearance and coldness, and used new-world and pale English hops to give it a flavour lager did not have.
