American porter is an English porter rebuilt with American hops and usually a heavier hand with the dark malt. Bitterness runs higher, the hop character is citrus and pine rather than earthy, and the roast is more assertive — enough that the line between it and an American stout is largely a matter of what the brewer chose to call it.

That blurring is not carelessness on BeerHQ's part; the porter and stout boundary has never been sharp, and it is softer in the United States than anywhere else. If you want the distinction to mean something, look for unmalted roasted barley: its sharper, drier roast is what most reliably marks a stout.

The hop character is where examples diverge most. A good one uses American hops to lift the roast rather than to argue with it, so citrus and pine sit above the chocolate instead of colliding with it. Where the bitterness stacks on top of an already assertive roast the beer turns harsh, and that harshness reads as roughness rather than as bitterness — which is why it is often mistaken for over-roasted malt.

Freshness and storage

American porter shows best within 3–8 months of packaging. After that it declines in quality rather than becoming unsafe.

No benefit from keeping. Sound for its window and then slowly less good. Nothing bad will happen quickly, but nothing good happens either.

What changes with time

  • Staling. The general, gradual loss of freshness that affects all beer, accelerated sharply by warmth. Months, and roughly twice as fast for every 10 °C warmer.

Old beer tastes worse; it does not become dangerous. Ethanol, low pH, hop compounds and the absence of oxygen make packaged beer hostile to the organisms that cause foodborne illness. The exception is a compromised package — visible mould at the closure, a pierced or rusted can, a lifted cap — which is a reason to discard the beer regardless of its age.

How it got here

American porter is a revival rather than a continuation. Porter had all but disappeared from British brewing by the middle of the twentieth century, and the beers brewed under the name from the 1970s and 1980s onward were reconstructions by American brewers working from written descriptions rather than from a surviving practice — which is why they tend to be more roast-forward and more heavily hopped than the historical record suggests.
