Also known as red ale, amber ale.

American amber ale is a pale ale with the crystal malt turned up. That single change moves the balance a long way: caramel and toffee sweetness gives the hop bitterness something to push against, so the same American hop varieties read rounder and less cutting than they do over a pale malt base.

It has been out of fashion for a decade, largely because crystal malt fell out of fashion with it. That makes it a useful recommendation for somebody who finds modern IPA too dry or too bitter — the hops are still there, but the beer has a malt spine to sit on.

A good one is judged on whether the caramel stays a base or becomes the beer. Crystal malt at this level brings a sticky quality that clings, and once the finish stops clearing the hops have nothing left to cut through — the commonest failure in the style, and the reason it acquired a reputation for being cloying. Look for a beer that finishes drier than it smells.

Freshness and storage

American amber ale shows best within 2–5 months of packaging. After that it declines in quality rather than becoming unsafe.

Drink fresh. Buy it as young as you can and drink it soon. What makes this beer worth drinking is the first thing to leave it.

  • A delicate beer with a short window. What makes it good is cleanliness and definition, which are the first things to blur.

What changes with time

  • Flavour decline. The beer is still perfectly sound, but the most volatile parts of its character have faded. Weeks to a few months, fastest in heavily dry-hopped beer.
  • Staling. The general, gradual loss of freshness that affects all beer, accelerated sharply by warmth. Months, and roughly twice as fast for every 10 °C warmer.

Old beer tastes worse; it does not become dangerous. Ethanol, low pH, hop compounds and the absence of oxygen make packaged beer hostile to the organisms that cause foodborne illness. The exception is a compromised package — visible mould at the closure, a pierced or rusted can, a lifted cap — which is a reason to discard the beer regardless of its age.

How it got here

Amber ale emerged alongside American pale ale in the 1980s as brewers reached for crystal malt to give a hop-forward beer more body and colour. For much of the following decade it was the style breweries used to introduce a hesitant drinker to craft beer, which is why so many brewpubs of the period had one.
