A light, commercially-produced amber lager, most familiar in its Mexican form, with gentle caramel over a crisp body.

International amber lager is the commercial amber lager sold worldwide — a mass-market pale lager with caramel malt added for colour and a touch of sweetness. Bitterness stays low, the malt character is more colour than flavour, and drinkability is the design goal.

It is worth distinguishing from Vienna lager and Märzen, which it superficially resembles. Those achieve their colour and depth through kilned malt and a longer maturation; this achieves it with caramel malt and volume production.

Colour here is the marketing rather than the recipe: the amber usually comes from a small caramel addition to an otherwise pale base, and the flavour difference from the pale version is smaller than the appearance suggests. Judge it on cleanliness and freshness like any mass-market lager, and expect a faint toffee note rather than genuine malt depth.

Freshness and storage

International amber lager shows best within 3–6 months of packaging. After that it declines in quality rather than becoming unsafe.

Drink fresh. Buy it as young as you can and drink it soon. What makes this beer worth drinking is the first thing to leave it.

  • A delicate beer with a short window. What makes it good is cleanliness and definition, which are the first things to blur.

What changes with time

  • Lightstrike. The skunky note that develops when beer is exposed to light through inadequate packaging. Minutes in direct sun; days to weeks under shop lighting.
  • Staling. The general, gradual loss of freshness that affects all beer, accelerated sharply by warmth. Months, and roughly twice as fast for every 10 °C warmer.

Old beer tastes worse; it does not become dangerous. Ethanol, low pH, hop compounds and the absence of oxygen make packaged beer hostile to the organisms that cause foodborne illness. The exception is a compromised package — visible mould at the closure, a pierced or rusted can, a lifted cap — which is a reason to discard the beer regardless of its age.

How it got here

International amber lager does not have a separate history of its own. It is a reading of Vienna lager, and that is where the account belongs — repeating it here would be a second copy of one story.
