Foreign extra stout was brewed strong and heavily hopped so that it would survive shipping to hot climates, and it stayed that way after the reason disappeared. At 6.3–8% with a firm bitterness and pronounced roast, it is much closer to the original export stouts than the domestic dry stout most drinkers know.
It remains genuinely popular in West Africa and the Caribbean rather than being a historical curiosity, and several of the largest-volume examples are brewed locally under licence. Expect roast, dark fruit and a dry, bitter finish with more alcoholic warmth than the colour prepares you for.
A good one carries its strength in the roast rather than beside it — the bitterness and the dark fruit should meet, not take turns. The style ages well by stout standards, and the locally brewed versions differ enough from one market to another that treating them as one beer is a mistake; they are separately formulated rather than shipped.

Freshness and storage
Foreign extra stout shows best within 6–18 months of packaging. After that it declines in quality rather than becoming unsafe.
Tolerates age. Keeps well without getting better. Useful if you are stocking a cellar and want something that will still be right in a year.
- Strong enough and malt-led enough to keep well, without gaining much from the wait.
What changes with time
- Oxidation. Reaction with oxygen, producing wet cardboard and sherry notes in pale beer and dark-fruit depth in strong dark beer. Months to years, depending on packaged oxygen and temperature.
- Staling. The general, gradual loss of freshness that affects all beer, accelerated sharply by warmth. Months, and roughly twice as fast for every 10 °C warmer.

Old beer tastes worse; it does not become dangerous. Ethanol, low pH, hop compounds and the absence of oxygen make packaged beer hostile to the organisms that cause foodborne illness. The exception is a compromised package — visible mould at the closure, a pierced or rusted can, a lifted cap — which is a reason to discard the beer regardless of its age.

Faults to watch for
- Astringency — A drying, tannic harshness from over-extracted grain husk — the classic sign of sparging too hot, too long or at too high a pH.
- Oxidation — The universal ageing fault: oxygen degrades beer into papery, cardboard-like staleness, and dulls everything that made it good.
How it got here
Brewed strong and heavily hopped so it would survive shipping to warm climates, foreign extra stout followed British and Irish trade routes to West Africa, the Caribbean and South and East Asia. In several of those markets it stopped being an import and became a locally-brewed staple, which is why the style is now more widely drunk outside Europe than within it.
