Also known as brown ale, northern brown ale.
English brown ale is built on nutty, biscuity, lightly caramelised malt with very little hop presence and a gentle finish. It is one of the least assertive styles in British brewing, and its virtue is exactly that — nothing in it demands attention, which makes it unusually easy to drink.
Northern and southern versions differ enough to be worth separating: the northern style is drier, stronger and nuttier, the southern noticeably sweeter, darker and weaker. Most modern examples follow the northern reading.
It is a beer that is easy to make competently and hard to make memorable, and the difference is in the malt rather than anywhere else. A good one has genuine hazelnut and biscuit depth with a dry finish; a poor one is simply brown and faintly sweet. Cask examples show it best, because the low carbonation lets the malt character carry.

Freshness and storage
English brown ale shows best within 3–6 months of packaging. After that it declines in quality rather than becoming unsafe.
No benefit from keeping. Sound for its window and then slowly less good. Nothing bad will happen quickly, but nothing good happens either.

What changes with time
- Oxidation. Reaction with oxygen, producing wet cardboard and sherry notes in pale beer and dark-fruit depth in strong dark beer. Months to years, depending on packaged oxygen and temperature.
- Staling. The general, gradual loss of freshness that affects all beer, accelerated sharply by warmth. Months, and roughly twice as fast for every 10 °C warmer.

Old beer tastes worse; it does not become dangerous. Ethanol, low pH, hop compounds and the absence of oxygen make packaged beer hostile to the organisms that cause foodborne illness. The exception is a compromised package — visible mould at the closure, a pierced or rusted can, a lifted cap — which is a reason to discard the beer regardless of its age.

How it got here
Brown ale in Britain means two different beers depending on where the name is used. The southern reading was weak, dark and sweet; the northern reading, established commercially in the 1920s, was stronger, drier and nuttier. It is the northern one that survived, which is why modern examples bear little resemblance to what the name meant in London.
How it is made
