Home of Altbier, a copper-coloured warm-fermented beer cold-conditioned in the manner of a lager.
In Germany.
Why it matters to beer
Altbier — literally "old beer", meaning the older top-fermenting method — survived in the Rhineland as lager displaced ale elsewhere in Germany. It is fermented with ale yeast but conditioned cold, giving a clean profile with distinct ale character.
