Glassware

Goblet

The Belgian abbey glass. Many are laser-etched inside the base to nucleate bubbles and sustain the head — a genuine mechanism, not decoration.

Shape

A wide, deep bowl on a thick stem, often heavy and sometimes etched inside the base.

Typical capacity 250–400 ml.

Drawn to scale against the other glasses BeerHQ lists, so heights and widths can be compared between pages.

What it does

  • Holds head. The rim and wall angle support a standing head rather than letting it collapse.
  • Builds head. Shape and internal surface encourage bubble nucleation, producing and sustaining foam on the pour.
  • Concentrates aroma. An inward-curving rim traps volatile aromatics above the beer, so more of them reach the nose.
  • Presentation. Shows colour, clarity and bead. Conventional rather than functional.

The etched or roughened spot at the bottom of many Belgian glasses provides nucleation sites where dissolved CO₂ comes out of solution. It produces the continuous stream of bubbles that keeps the head standing through a long, slow drink.
