The crown cork
A crimped metal disc with a cork liner — an unglamorous object that solved the problem every previous bottle closure had failed at, and has barely changed since.
Before
Bottle closures were corks wired down, swing stoppers, internal screw stoppers and various patented devices. All were expensive, slow to apply, or leaky, and carbonated beer punishes a leaky seal quickly. This is the bottleneck — in both senses — that had kept bottled beer a premium product despite cheap glass.
After
A crown cork is stamped from sheet metal, applied in one motion by a machine, seals reliably against internal pressure, and costs almost nothing. That is the entire argument. High-speed bottling lines become possible, carbonated beer survives distribution, and the design is so nearly optimal that a cap from 1900 and a cap from today differ mainly in the liner material.

Why it spread
Displaced everything else within a generation, because it was cheaper, faster and more reliable at once — a rare combination, and the reason this is one of the few genuinely decisive single inventions on the list.
What it displaced: Wired corks, swing stoppers and internal screw stoppers, of which the swing stopper survives as a deliberate anachronism.
Who is credited
Painter patented the crown cork in Baltimore in 1892, having previously patented other bottle closures that worked less well. The attribution is documented and uncontroversial.
A contemporary record supports this attribution.
What it depended on
These had to happen in this order. That dependency is why brewing technology arrives in chains rather than as isolated inventions.
