Great American Beer Festival
The Brewers Association’s festival and competition in Denver — the event that tracked the American craft sector from a few dozen breweries to several thousand.

Why it started
Founded in 1982 by Charlie Papazian, at a point when American brewing had been reduced to a handful of large producers making very similar beer. It began as a way of showing that variety existed at all, and grew alongside the sector it was documenting.
What it is
GABF is unusual among the festivals here in that the competition is the substance and the festival is the setting. Judging runs across more than a hundred beer and cider categories, blind, by an international panel, and a GABF medal is among the most cited credentials in American brewing.
The category list is itself an artefact worth understanding. It is revised annually, and what it recognises is a running record of what American brewers are actually making — which is why the arrival of a category is often the moment a style can be said to exist commercially.
It also functions as the sector’s annual assembly. The Brewers Association runs it, small breweries pour their own beer, and the festival is where a fragmented industry meets itself once a year — a role closer to a trade gathering than to a civic festival.

Gold, silver and bronze awarded across more than a hundred categories, judged blind. The medals are cited on packaging for years afterwards and materially affect a small brewery’s distribution.

Breweries staff their own tables rather than sending distributors, so the person pouring is usually the person who made it. It is a deliberate feature of the format and shapes how the room works.
