Comparison

American IPA vs American pale ale

What is the difference between IPA and pale ale?

The short answer

Degree, not kind. IPA is stronger, more bitter and far more heavily hopped, particularly late in the process for aroma. Pale ale keeps a malt backbone in balance; IPA subordinates it to hops. The boundary is genuinely blurry and some beers could reasonably carry either label.

Where they overlap

They share comparable bitterness, sweetness, body — the boundary between them is narrower than the comparison suggests.
