Country

Netherlands

A major exporter of international pale lager, with a separate and much older tradition of strong abbey-influenced ales in the south.

The Netherlands is best known internationally through large lager brands, but the southern provinces share a brewing culture with Belgian Limburg and Brabant, including abbey-style strong ales and witbier.

Dutch brewing science also contributed one of the most consequential technical advances in the field: the isolation of a single pure yeast strain at Heineken in the 1880s, which made reproducible fermentation possible at industrial scale.

Brewing traditions

Belgian abbey and Trappist brewing

Strong, highly attenuated, bottle-conditioned ales built on expressive yeast and candi sugar, produced in or licensed by monastic communities.

  • Warm fermentation with highly attenuative house yeast strains that generate substantial esters and phenols.
  • Use of candi sugar or syrup to raise strength while keeping the body light, so a 9% beer can still finish dry.
  • Bottle conditioning with a secondary fermentation, giving high carbonation and long-term development.
