Netherlands

Bierbrouwerij De Koningshoeven

Trappist brewery at the Koningshoeven abbey near Tilburg, and the only Dutch member of the Trappist family.

Also known as La Trappe, Koningshoeven.

Why it matters

Demonstrates that Trappist is a certification about provenance rather than a Belgian nationality: the abbey is Dutch, the beers are recognisably in the Belgian tradition, and the mark applies on the same terms.

Reference beers

BeerHQ carries only the products that anchor something. This is not the brewery’s full range.

Styles it is associated with

  • TripelA strong pale Belgian ale that is simultaneously rich and dry, with pepper, orchard fruit and a sparkling, deceptive drinkability.
  • DubbelA dark Belgian ale rich in raisin, plum and caramel from dark candi sugar, dry-finishing despite its sweetness of flavour.

Traditions

  • Belgian abbey and Trappist brewingStrong, highly attenuated, bottle-conditioned ales built on expressive yeast and candi sugar, produced in or licensed by monastic communities.
