Comparison

Märzen vs Festbier

Which one is actually Oktoberfest beer?

The short answer

Festbier. The Munich tents have poured the paler, more golden Festbier since the 1970s. Amber Märzen remains a real and excellent style, and is what most beers labelled "Oktoberfest" outside Germany imitate, but it is no longer the beer at Oktoberfest.

Where they overlap

They share comparable bitterness, sweetness, body, overlapping strength ranges — the boundary between them is narrower than the comparison suggests.
