Traquair House Brewery
Brewery in the grounds of Traquair House in the Scottish Borders, working from eighteenth-century oak vessels rediscovered in 1965.
Why it matters
The equipment is the record: the brewhouse had been sealed and forgotten for over a century, and the beer is fermented in the original oak. It is the closest thing in Britain to a working eighteenth-century brewery rather than a reconstruction of one.

Reference beers
BeerHQ carries only the products that anchor something. This is not the brewery’s full range.
Styles it is associated with
- Wee heavy — A strong, intensely malty Scottish ale with deep caramel and dried fruit and almost no hop presence.
Traditions
- British cask ale — Beer that completes its fermentation in the container it is served from and is dispensed without added gas, at cellar rather than fridge temperature.
