Stieglbrauerei zu Salzburg
Austria’s largest privately owned brewery, in Salzburg, and the most widely exported Austrian lager.
Also known as Stiegl.
Why it matters
Austrian brewing sits between the Bavarian and Bohemian traditions and is usually described as a footnote to both. This brewery is the practical case for treating it separately: independently owned at a scale where almost nothing else is, and producing a Märzen that is the everyday beer of a region rather than a seasonal one — which is what the word means locally and not what it means in Munich.

Reference beers
BeerHQ carries only the products that anchor something. This is not the brewery’s full range.
Styles it is associated with
- Munich Helles — Bavaria’s everyday pale lager: soft, bready and malt-forward, with just enough hop to balance and nothing to distract.
- Märzen — A rich amber lager brewed in March for autumn drinking, with deep toasty malt and a clean, firm finish.
