Spain
Damm
Barcelona brewery founded by an Alsatian brewer, and the reason Spanish lager tastes the way it does.
Also known as Estrella Damm, Cervezas Damm.
Why it matters
Spanish brewing is a nineteenth-century import by central European brewers working in a hot climate, and this brewery is where that adaptation is most legible. The house style is lighter and drier than its Alsatian parent, brewed with rice as well as barley — a response to the conditions it is drunk in rather than a cost decision, though it is frequently read as the second.
