How many calories are in a beer?

Beer calories come from two places — the alcohol and the sugar left unfermented — and alcohol supplies most of them in almost every beer. At around 7 kcal per gram, alcohol is nearly twice as energy-dense as carbohydrate, which is why a strong dry beer generally has more calories than a weak sweet one.

That is also why light and low-carb marketing is often misleading: reducing residual sugar changes the smaller of the two contributions. Any figure produced here is an estimate from gravity and strength, not a laboratory measurement, and it will not match a producer's own declared value exactly.

What this assumes

  • The beer contains no post-fermentation additions such as lactose, fruit syrup or sweeteners.
  • Final gravity is the true terminal gravity.

Where it stops being reliable

  • An estimate from gravity, not a measurement. Declared nutritional values come from laboratory analysis and will differ.
  • Colour tells you nothing about calories — they track alcohol and residual sugar. A dry stout at 4.2% has fewer calories than most pale beers of similar strength.
  • Beers with added lactose or fruit will read low, since those sugars are not captured by the gravity drop.
