Glossary
Cru
Borrowed from wine and used in Belgian brewing — as in "Grand Cru" — to indicate a brewery’s stronger or more prestigious version of a beer.
Pronounced kroo.
Trade usage. Established by practice in the trade rather than by any formal definition.
Commonly misunderstood
Unlike in wine, it carries no classification or appellation status in beer. It is a producer’s own designation for a premium product.
