Glassware
Flute
Borrowed from sparkling wine, and used for gueuze and other highly carbonated beers for the same reason: it preserves the bead.
Shape
A tall, very narrow stemmed glass.
Typical capacity 180–250 ml.
Drawn to scale against the other glasses BeerHQ lists, so heights and widths can be compared between pages.
What it does
- Keeps carbonation. A tall, narrow column reduces surface area relative to volume, so the beer holds its condition for longer.
- Presentation. Shows colour, clarity and bead. Conventional rather than functional.
- Keeps temperature. A stem or handle keeps the hand off the bowl, so the beer warms more slowly than it would in a tumbler.
