Belgian Beer Weekend
Belgium’s brewers take over the Grand-Place in Brussels for a weekend each September — a national trade body’s festival held in a UNESCO world heritage square.
The City of Brussels and the organisers both give 4–6 September 2026 on the Grand-Place for the 2026 edition.
Why it started
Organised by Belgian Brewers, the national brewers’ federation, whose Brewers’ House stands on the Grand-Place itself. The festival is the trade body presenting the country’s brewing on the city’s central square.
What it is
The setting is the point. The Grand-Place is one of the most complete late-medieval squares in Europe, and the guild houses around it include the Brewers’ House, which has been the brewers’ seat for centuries and now holds their museum. Holding the festival there is a statement about brewing’s place in Belgian civic history rather than a venue decision.
The format is a national showcase rather than a competition: breweries from across Belgium pour their own beers, entrance is free and tasting is paid by token. That makes it an unusually broad snapshot of Belgian brewing, from Trappist houses to small regional producers, in one place.
It is worth saying what it is not. It is not a lambic festival — the Pajottenland gueuze producers have their own occasions — and it is not where the country’s most specialised beer culture lives. It is the mainstream of Belgian brewing, presented by its own federation.
What happens

A ceremonial brewers’ order inducts new members in the square during the weekend, in robes, using a mash staff. It is a guild ceremony of the kind that survived in Belgium long after equivalents elsewhere were abolished.
The matched glass

What is poured
- Tripel
A strong pale Belgian ale that is simultaneously rich and dry, with pepper, orchard fruit and a sparkling, deceptive drinkability.
- Dubbel
A dark Belgian ale rich in raisin, plum and caramel from dark candi sugar, dry-finishing despite its sweetness of flavour.
- Gueuze
A blend of young and old lambic, refermented in bottle — intensely complex, bone dry and Champagne-like in its carbonation.
What is eaten
- Belgian café food rather than a festival cuisine — the eating happens in the surrounding streets, which is a consequence of holding a festival in a protected historic square.
How it has changed
Festivals are usually much less continuous than they are described as being, and the discontinuities are part of the record rather than a footnote to it.
- It has grown from a modest brewers’ gathering into the country’s principal public beer occasion, while staying under the control of the national federation rather than a commercial promoter.
