Country

Sweden

A Nordic brewing country with a state retail monopoly for stronger beer and a well-established independent sector.

Swedish alcohol retail above 3.5% ABV runs through the state monopoly Systembolaget, which has shaped both what is brewed and how it is sold. A distinct commercial category of lower-strength beer exists specifically to be sold in ordinary shops.

Brewing traditions

Baltic porter brewing

The Baltic adaptation of English export porter, rebuilt with lager yeast and cold fermentation at high strength.

  • Fermenting a strong dark beer with lager yeast at low temperature, producing a clean profile at 7–10% ABV.
  • Extended cold conditioning, which smooths what would otherwise be a heavy, fusel-prone strong beer.
  • Deep roasted malt character without the sharp burnt edge of a dry stout, and a notable dark-fruit sweetness.

Nordic farmhouse brewing

Surviving rural brewing traditions using juniper, indigenous yeast cultures and no conventional lauter.

  • Filtering the mash through juniper branches in a wooden trough rather than through a conventional grain bed.
  • Fermenting with kveik or other maintained farmhouse yeast cultures, often at very high temperatures, which produce heavy fruit esters without fusel harshness.
  • Minimal or no hopping, with juniper providing both flavour and some preservative effect.
