The largest beer market in the world, and a brewing culture that is almost entirely a lager tradition transmitted from Germany rather than grown at home.
China brews and drinks more beer than any other country by volume. Almost all of it is light pale lager, typically brewed with rice, which lightens body and dries the finish further than the maize used elsewhere.
The tradition is imported and its arrival is documented rather than inferred: German brewers founded a brewery at Qingdao in 1903, during the German lease of the territory, and built it to German practice. That line is why brewing at scale in China is a lager industry.
A craft sector has grown since the 2010s, concentrated in the largest cities. BeerHQ carries no reference beers from it yet, because the products are young and their availability outside China is not established.
