Eldridge Pope
Dorchester brewery, now closed, whose Thomas Hardy’s Ale was the strongest and longest-lived English bottled ale of its era.
Also known as Dorchester Brewery.
No longer brewing. BeerHQ keeps closed breweries because historical importance does not end when a company does. Anything said here about current products or availability should be treated as needing verification.
Why it matters
Thomas Hardy’s Ale was brewed to be cellared for decades rather than months, and is the reference case for English barley wine as a beer designed to age. The brewery closed, the beer has been revived more than once elsewhere, and the distinction between those two facts is exactly what a status field is for.

Reference beers
BeerHQ carries only the products that anchor something. This is not the brewery’s full range.
Styles it is associated with
- English barley wine — The strongest traditional English ale: dense malt, dried fruit and marmalade, built to be kept for years.
Traditions
- British cask ale — Beer that completes its fermentation in the container it is served from and is dispensed without added gas, at cellar rather than fridge temperature.
